The Island of Madeira is an autonomous region of Portugal.  An archipelago comprising 4 islands off the northwest coast of Africa. 

It was discovered in the early 1400's and is well known for its subtropical climate and its wine. The Island is mountainous and offers outdoor pursuits include hiking along old levadas (aqueducts) in the mountains, golf, surfing, paragliding, coasteering, whale watching and scuba diving.
